Mesh and Alpha Issues – A guide/what to look for
Edit: Please read comments by Mel Vanbeeck and Siddean Munro for other important points.
Ok before I start I must point out, this post is in no way a criticism of the hair shown in the post. I have the permission of Kavar Cleanslate of Exile hair to use his hair as an example to show what many of you may have experienced with glitches with alpha sorting with mesh items, whether both items are mesh or only one of the items is mesh.
I used a mesh avatar upper body for this post so that no ones clothing was used, this is not a finger wag at anyone, this is to help those that do not realise what is causing issues, and maybe to help some that did not know, realise that they can fix it.
Many years ago LL introduced PNG uploads, and there was a huge sigh of relief around the grid, because it meant that when making clothing layer clothing, you could forget about doing all the complicated alpha channel work, and just save as an alpha in one step, anything not painted on would save with alpha, and you were done. Many got so used to using/uploading png’s that it became a habit to save them for everything, especially as if there was no ‘visible’ alpha, it was just solid and looked good.
This is not the case, as PNG’s are sneaky, and they are always alpha in the default save settings in Photoshop.
Now with Mesh alpha which is most often used in hair textures, if you wear mesh hair, and you have on clothing that is mesh and has alpha components, then you get this cutout like effect and suddenly you cannot wear one or the other. In some cases there have been customers that have taken this matter up with the hair creator, but there is nothing that the hair creators can actually do because they need alpha in their hair because of wisps and bangs etc.
But if your clothing does not actually need alpha – and really none of it should unless you are trying to alter a model, or trying for a sheer effect – then you need to make sure you are saving your textures in the correct format. The goal is that everyone is able to wear your clothing/Accessories at all times, not have to rethink their other items for it to be wearable.
I took some pictures with not only the different textures on the mesh top, but also showed the textures open so you can see how it is. I also wanted to point out a few things about the mesh UV map surrounding areas.
Because I am using the default avatar in mesh form, I was able to use the default avatar clothing layers. You used to be able to find these on the Second Life website, but now they are located at the Second Life Wiki HERE .
First Pic : No Alpha 24 bit TGA
This first pic is a complete fill of the actual intended print of the item, as well as a pure black fill – on clothing layers the black would have had to have been alpha, but with mesh anything in that area does not show at all. This layer has been saved as a 24 bit Targa, when you chose to save as targa, you get a pop up that has options of 16 bit 24 bit and 32 bit. The 24 bit option is for no alpha channels at all.
Second Pic : No Alpha 24 bit TGA
Proving that whatever is in the surrounding space doesn’t show, by filling that area with Pizza and showing the other side of the mesh top and the seams areas. This layer has been saved as a 24 bit Targa, when you chose to save as targa, you get a pop up that has options of 16 bit 24 bit and 32 bit. The 24 bit option is for no alpha channels at all.
Third Pic : Alpha 32 bit TGA
This picture is showing that the texture was saved as a 32 bit Alpha layer, and that once put on the top as its texture, you can now see the instant alpha sorting glitch, where the hair alpha looks to have cut out the part of the top it lays across. I chose the one sided tail style hair, so that you could see it that it effects only the side the hair is on.
Fourth Pic : Alpha PNG
This picture shows the texture was saved as a PNG and has alpha properties that are visual, so the texture would have been saved as a PNG because the creator wanted those parts to be alpha – which would have been the case for clothing layer clothing, or things such as plants, or cut outs etc.
Fifth Pic : Filled PNG
This is where the mistakes may be occurring, with the texture looking as though it is 100% solid, no cut outs, no visible alpha areas on the texture, the texture seems like a regular image. Though once applied to the top you can see that it still causes the part covered with hair to vanish. This will happen to the back of the top too if the hair is long and has alpha wisps etc – again this is not the fault of the hair, this is a mesh alpha issue.
Sixth and Seventh Pics : PNGs side by Side
This picture shows the both PNG textures on boxes side by side, as well as on the top worn. Then using CTRL ALT and T to highlight transparent in world, you can see that the red that indicates there is alpha, shows up on all three items. This is a good way to check your store vendors and see if you have at any time uploaded PNG’s for full filled images. As you can see, if someone is wearing mesh hair and standing around where there are PNG textured Vendors, signs and so on, they will also end up with this effect, which does not make things pleasant, and again could cause the wearer to believe there is an error with the hair.
Eighth and Ninth Pic : TGA 24 bit Hot Pink Fill
This picture shows you how mesh appears unrezzed, or not fully rezzed. You may have experienced faint black lines on things you wear, sometimes they look odd because they are not straight lines but more like map trails. These are those fill areas showing through before the seams fully as the texture finishes rezzing. UV maps sometimes are a complex unwrapping process, so wherever the item has been cut open and splayed out so to speak, is where you will see those markings.
This is why I am assuming that some may be using alpha in those fill areas, so that there is no appearance of bleeding while rezzing. The better option, and I have tested this, is to actually use either the colour of the item you are saving the texture as if its a blue top then fill it with the same blue and so one while you save each colour. This way, even though the item may not be fully rezzed there will not be an appearance of weird lines due to the fill being a different colour.
So if you do come across clothing that does this when you wear mesh hair, or other mesh alpha necessary items, then check first to see if there are any sheer attributes to the item, or cut out areas of the design, that may just be done with texture not actual modeling the cut outs. If there appears to be no reason for alpha to be part of the item, contact the creator and let them know that their items are having this issue. They may not know about the alpha sorting, and they may not realise that PNG uploads even if solid contain alpha. I myself have made that mistake in the past, and even mistakenly uploaded a whole store full of vendor ads in 32 bit Targa because I kept hearing my boss saying she had to save targas as 32 bit and i was so new to PS that I thought that was a must for everything.
Also please note, this will not happen with non mesh hair, so if you do own an item of clothing that has this issue, and you just love it to bits, then just wear hair that is either up and out of the way of your clothing, or non mesh while you have it on. But again I suggest letting the creator know in a notecard, as they may be able to fix it.
I hope this helps and thank you to Kavar again for letting me show his hair for this post.

Ride Along – Collabor88 Zodiac New Hair and Leather
It certainly is a big one, it comes with 6 pictures, 14 crashes and a partridge in a pear tree. But for me it was worth every minute. Today the word was spread around that it was Gyorgyna Larnia’s Birthday, but that is not the only creator having a Birthday today, it is Minnu Palen’s Birthday as well, and her and Thora are partying it up rl right now, and I send all my love their way. So Happy Birthday to both Minnu and Gyorgyna and everyone celebrating a special day today.
Many of the accessories in this post are from LaGyo to help celebrate, and one of my favourite items is the shield rings, these rings were the first oversized rings I ever really coveted in Second Life, as soon as I saw them I was smitten, the size, the texture and the fact that there were two styles in the set. Lagyo and Gyorgynas style and creativity has just blossomed so much over the years, and I cannot wait to see what she does with the remainder of the year, as this year was a very important one for her RL wise, and she dedicated much of her focus to that, and now, she can get into mesh and wow us all. Such as she has done with the beautiful Mothers Pearls necklace, earrings and big ring for Collabor88/September, so pretty and colour change options that worked so well with the Sitari colours.
Another creator that has been a great creator to watch for fun styles and great blend-able fashion, is Emery designer Sunami Beck. This latest mesh release is really beautiful, the bags are stunning, and the leggings and other items are great for mixing and matching. These contrast leather leggings have a great shape, beautiful colours, and have a lovely insert of black leather that gives them a jodhpur influence that is way cool.
The tied front top I am wearing is from Monso, and that is mesh but not rigged so it is resizable in edit..the top does not come with an alpha layer, so you will have to definitely decide when trying the demo if it is going to work for your shape or not. It is a really cute top and goes great with the leggings.
That lead me to the Sitari set, wearing the top with the leggings and then moving onto all the pieces that are currently available at this months Zodiac event ‘Virgo’. You must make the effort to stock up on your Elymode now while you can, as Elysium is going away soon, so we may not have any new newness for a few months, so buy everything and pace yourself until she returns. The set has a wheat influence print on the socks – as an option – but I went without seeing as I was wearing boots too high to see them really anyway. The top comes with two lengths, and the micro skirt with mesh insert is as usual sexy as. The cinch is from a much older release, and brings the top and the skirt into another look. The Sitari set also has shorty shorts – if you don’t wear the mesh insert, as well as underpants/boyshort style – as an option of wear, which is great. Her colours are magnificent and really pop as always.
Collabor88/September just started, and if you hadn’t heard it now has its own sim called 8 8 (make sure you include the space) The highwaist shorts are by Ingenue for the event, and wowza. The style of them are so very Ingenue, and the colours are great for mixing and matching with so many items, but I went with some old items from Whippet & Buck, as they complimented the looks so well. I especially love the bow waist belted look to these shorts, and I hope there are plans for different colours and varieties in the future, a pair with that double front buttoned vintage look would be outstanding.
The kate flats are the latest release in mesh by Elate, and look so cute with the shorts and a few other bits and pieces, such as skinny jeans and well just about anything really. They come in 18 different colours and have the solid or striped leather options, I am torn as to which one I like better, the stripe are so cute, but solids do work better with everything.
Lastly the hair, another fantastic release from Exile, these styles and the colours are just great. I was having to stop a few times today to let people know where it was from, which is always a good thing. When Whimsy and I go shopping she calls us 3D bloggers, because then people can see in person what things are, but with mesh not being inspectable it does mean having to IM people, so if you do ever see us around and you are curious, do not even give it a second thought, IM away… and regardless who it is, never be too shy or hesitant to IM someone and ask, to me it is a compliment of their style, and if they don’t wish to share the information, then take their pic and ask in Fashion Emergency group lol that’s what so many do anyway.
Have a wonderful weekend ♥

C’mere Stud – New Hair
New Hair New Hair New Hair, and so divine to wear. LeLutka has released these three gorgeous styles and with the addition of the bun from the previous Swish release, you can add some detail to the Lively style that underneath that bun actually has a hair clip, but I felt that if going for a more peace love and mungbeans look this was a great alternative, also really handy for those that RP or dress up in traditional attire that wouldn’t work necessarily well with a modern clip, but both ways I just love Lively lots. The other style Blake is a not pinned back wavy long style, and both of them together will have you just loving the long.
Great news too for natural fans, not only do the new styles come in the fabulous fades packs, but LeLutka has also now added a new naturals pack of 8 colours that are just fabulous for those like me that change their colours lots. Also the longer styles come in three sizes based on standard sizing, so the head size is the same, but the chest area increases so that they fit over mesh clothing and more breast, not overly though but definitely enough…I am wearing the large in the pics.
The Keeley hair is so stylish, and reminds me so much of the previous Rykiel hair, but tamed down but ready to frizz forth at any opportunity, it is very Madonna old school looking, I can’t wait to see all three styles on everyone. To go with the three styles I went with the same great mesh shorts from Erratic, these studded shorts are available in a wide range of dyed, bleached and solid colour blends. Such wonderful detailing with actual studs, belt loops and button work, these are must haves for all sexy short wearing women.
I had a great time coming up with the different options of wear with them, the dramatic look with the collared corset, that is a combination of both collar and corset from Red Mint, that I am really liking a lot. That and the thigh high boots from Slink and I am ready to rock on. Then the comfy and snuggly cardigan and attic boho bag from Toki Doki and you have a great casual all round day look. I loved revisiting the stunning loafers by Treads for this look, they are still so gorgeous to wear.
Then lastly the very pretty soboho blouse and shorts gave me a very serene and feminine look. I love this hair so much, and you can see here I have the bun from Swish on with it, and the tendrils and the whole look as though wrapped around before being released down the back, so cool.

FaMESHed is well under way for the month of September, with some lovely items available. The Heidi dress is Rebel Hopes item for the event, and this beautiful brown colour really shows off the detailing in the dress. I added this shrug from Mon Tissu that is sculpted but managed to resize ok over the dress, some glasses a bangle, and the great LaViere hair that is also at FaMESHed this month, and it is all stylish and fabulous for a date night or even attending a more up market event.
The Regatta dress is a recent mesh release from Miel, and this dress is just lovely, with the belted waist and a glorious HUD that lets you change colours of both the dress and the belt, giving you many combinations. I am wearing the stripe version in natural. The dress also has solid, bright and natural, stripe natural and bright as well as crayon natural and stripe, so many must haves.
It is definitely time to stock up on dresses right now, so have a great time trying everything.

L’APH out loud
A long time ago there was a store called Aphrodite Creations with wonderful items created by Aphrodite Outlander. Lucky for us, she has returned with the new all mesh brand called L’APH. As of last night the new brand opened its doors and a lovely first collection was revealed. The items are lovely light weight summery frocks and pastel colours, soft suedes and lovely leathers. Items that can take you from day to night, and all just the start of something much bigger…I for one cannot wait.
I took all colour pics of the footwear, and if you join the subscribo at the store, you will get a pair of the ballet flats as a gift. The fleur dresses come in the petite (shown) and grande (not shown) are really lovely strapless dresses. My favourite part of them is the hemline, how it dips at the back and front in the middle, I just really like the effect it creates, and it helps with movement. I also really like the contrast edging on the prints.
The Mia pants are really cool pants, that come in three variations, I am wearing the flared cuffs, which are needed to sit well over the heel of the shoes. Teaming them up with the adorable and sexy cowgirl shirts from Toki Doki. For a very stylish look I added the recent release of the renee mesh hip scarf by Mimikri that I just love. Another really cool top to wear with these pants is the satin blouse from Dumani, such a great fabric, and I really like the cowl neckline.
The two hair styles I am wearing are the latest releases from Exile, one style is available at FaMESHed for September. Exciting news for Exile fans is that there are gorgeous new Fusion packs of colours, that are really pretty gradient like colour blends in natural and fantasy colours. Other newness is the Lilith skin by Glam Affair. This skin has such rich lipsticks it really is incredible how the effects of make ups such as this are all done in photoshop, such a skill to spend hours blending and layering to achieve such results. So big snaps to all those that do make ups, and help make us all beautiful, and big snaps to Glam Affair because Lilith is hot, so you all need to Demo Demo Demo.

My Attic ends at Midnight
The clock is ticking as we wind down this session of My Attic @ The Deck for August, there will not be another one until late october, so this is your last chance to grab these gorgeous items for the 95L price tag. My first look is actually combining the Camille skirt by Elate which is a beautiful pencil skirt, with the bustier portion of the Nylon Outfitters release for Collabor88 which only has a week left to grab that too. The whole set of the Baroque bustle is very Moulin Rouge , but the top portion looks great with pants or a skirt such as this.
I added the newest release coming to FaMESHed by Maxi’s which are the Barcelona pieces of jewelry. They are texture change, and as usual the necklace gives many wonderful options of single strands at various lengths or combinations to save attachment points.
The second look is the beautiful Vesper Gown by Tutti Frutti, so named after the female lead in Casino Royale and I watched that the other week and it was just so so heartbreaking, so if you haven’t seen it yet, you must. The print on the fabric is like sprays of light, so pretty and perfect for an elegant evening. I wore the earrings and bracelet from the Barcelona set this time changed to gold, to bring up those colours in the dress.
The Pepper mini dress by BOOM sexy as, it has the off the shoulder raunchiness, that with the long sleeves just has you looking like you were caught undressing or something like that, very hot, especially in the leo print. The fabric is a soft velvet look, so it is going to be perfect to wear even leading up into the cooler months. I couldn’t resist adding the headband by LaGyo that was a past TDR item, it is so cute, that and the collar from RedMint and I was channelling my inner PussyCat.
Lastly the Martini Dress and Clutch from DCNY, this dress is super stylish. The clutch comes with and just adds to the sophistication, but I went with a more of a street look, adding the latest boots from Red Mint, the Riven are Mesh and super hot. The tights are an older pair of MStyle, but I love them so much, they do such great leggings and tights, I need more of these for sure. The hair is Hinako and seriously is the cutest thing, the clip is just the icing on the awesome cake.
Other accessories are the bag in the first pic and the bangle in the last which are also new items from Dumani, I mentioned them the other day, a new store you should check out.
I so love when you take one pic and then crash and all the rest end up different, I will do better next time.

Ruffled – My Attic, Collabor88/August
I was out and about shopping with Mel last night, and we found ourselves at Vista Animations. I have done posts many times where I have stated that I use animations as well as static poses for my posts, well todays pics were actually taken with dances by Vista. Their dances selection has grown a lot since I was last there, and the fat packs of each type are definitely worth considering as they are a good saving.
With animated poses/dances, the best way to shoot the pics is to use ‘slow motion animation‘ settings. You will find that function in Develop menu. To get develop menu up, you first need the Advanced menu (Ctrl Alt D) then scroll down to the bottom and activate Develop Menu, then you can find it in the Avatar sub-menu. This will slow you down enough to capture some great shots.
With all this movement, I wanted some hair with movement, and Felice from EMO-tions has lots of it. This hair is very entertaining, it is transition hair, meaning it is scripted to change from one style to another, and was a big hit at Hair Fair. I swear I did a whole lap of the fair changing my hair back and forth over and over again and giggling to myself. Transition hair is not new to Second Life, but this style is one of the best I have seen of this type.
Another advantage to using animations and dances, is that you really get a good look at how mesh moves with your avatar. The first outfit has these wonderful frill shorts from G*field. They really remind me of 80’s tiered skirts, and are so much fun and a great fit. The socks and bolero are also G*field and I need to wear both a lot more often as I just love the ruffled edging on both.
The second look is with the Dorota top from Glam Affair, which is part of their Collabor88/August items. The classic elegance of this top is just divine, with the ribbon along the empire line, but with that modern mullet effect short front long back look that is definitely popular at the moment. I am wearing it with the Zoey leather pants from Erratic that are just great, but would look just as wonderful with a skirt or even hotpants underneath. I did have to wear a larger option of shirt so that the back didn’t clip with the leggings. I also added the Deliciosa bra – part of the My Attic release from Cynful – to both looks, the first it of course covered up everything, but I also loved adding the red edging that peeks out the top of the Dorota shirt.
Lastly and also from Erratic, the Amy silk blouse is a shirt that I have seen on so many fashionable women of late, and rightly so. The loose fit, the wonderful cleavage and the perfectly collar are just some of the great attributes of this blouse. The colours are rich and lovely, but I cannot help but wonder what it would look like with a print as well, curiosity wise of course. Erratic has been releasing amazing mesh and more to look forward to.

Red Leather Yellow Leather – My Attic, Vintage Fair, Zodiac, Collabor88
As I mentioned in an earlier post, only a few days left to visit events that are winding down, some starting and some waving bye bye for the year.Collabor88/August is a MUST to visit if only for every colour of these amazing leather leggings and the fantastic half tucked tee. Seriously this tshirt is incredible, it not only looks perfect with these stunning leggings – the texturing on these is superb – but I have been wearing them with jeans and all sorts of other things for weeks now. I hope so much that this shirt gets released in more colours when it hits the main store for Tres Blah, because in RL this shirt is the kind you would buy in every colour in multiples for each colour just in case you could never get it again.
To help with the tucked look, the buckled belt from Izzies was just the ticket, they come with two buckle colour options, and I am wearing the silver buckle version. It is mesh but not rigged, so you have resize options of either scripted or edit manually.
The hairstyles I am wearing are by Ploom, the beautiful head-banded style comes with a texture change hud for the fabric, as well of course of the individual colour packs of choice for the hair. This style is currently at Vintage Fair, and the other great style is Vespa, which is another blunt bangs vintage look, that is available at My Attic @ The Deck/August.
Accessories wise I am wearing some shades and necklaces by Dumani, a new brand to hit the grid, with some really good mesh skills from what I have seen so far. The necklaces fit me well, and the glasses are great, but I suggest trying the items before purchase, which you should always do anyway, because things will not always fit, and rigging in some cases – not this one – may not work well for you, so always try before you buy if that option is available. The colours and prints Dumani are using are vibrant and fashionable, so make sure you check them out soon.
Now about the skin, this is Shyla, a brand new skin by Belleza. The mouth is gorgeous, the make ups are wonderful, and the tones are just lovely. The skin was made for darker haired avatars, but comes with the red and blonde brows options, I actually went with the red brows for the face shots. The smattering of light freckles across the nose are really lovely, and the skin comes with extra lipstick options in tattoo, so that you can interchange the eyes with the lips and so on, making the fat pack a great value release. DEMO DEMO DEMO
The poses I am using for this post are by Adorkable Poses, you can check them out at My Attic as well as Zodiac, as they are both from event releases, and so lovely, especially the fact that they come with mirrors.

She wore an itty bitty – My Attic/August
While Fiachra was doing Dolphin Flips and swimming as a stringray and whale around me, I took this picture of the Ribbon Kini by Pididdle that is part of My Attic @ The Deck/August. He was also showing off his Junk, but that is an entirely different story, and cleaner than you think.
The bikini is adorable, and yet very sexy the way the straps are placed a the fact that the fabric barely covers the breasts, but not in a tacky way. I especially like the ribbon detailing around the waistband of the panties, I would actually love to see more of that on things like skirts or shorts.
The new hair I am wearing is Lover 2.0 by Epoque. Epoque is one of those stores that does great hair when they do hair at all, but it is unfortunately too few and far between, I am hoping that with mesh now that will change, and so far it seems to be looking that way. The textures of Epoque hair are very rich and lovely looking, with a great sheen, The blunt bangs and the back parting of this style make it easy to wear with lots of looks.
Only a few days left of My Attic @ The Deck for August as well as Vintage Fair coming to an end for the year, one event that just started up for the month the last few days is the next session of Zodiac which is on Virgo for the month. There is only another week or so left of the huge Birthday celebration of Collabor88/August, so you wont want to miss that either.

Twiggette – Vintage Fair, My Attic/August
Only a few days left of Vintage Fair 2012, and it has been a wonderful event. So many truly inspired takes on the whole concept of vintage, from all different time periods which has been really cool to see. The dress I am featuring in this post is the Printed Shift Dress by Ison, they did an amazing release for this event. Three stunning dresses, and footwear, all with a very 60’s influence, and the styles would have any lover of that era chomping at the bit to get their bodies draped in such beautiful pieces…I know I was.
The shift dress is a delight print wise and colour combination wise, and while normally I would rock out some white boots for this kind of look, this softer tan colour just brought out the beautiful creamy tones in each dress colour combination. I have taken the pics in the third of the WinxBoxes released for My Attic @ The Deck/August, this is the Stirred WinxBox and has texture change everything, this is my favourite of the three released, because it has both the very Mod 60’s influence to it, but also the colours and ‘racing stripes’ give it a fun Music Video kind of feel, you need to try it to see what I mean.
The hairstyles worn in the pics are all from different stores, which is not something I have done in a while, the Fedora style is from Argrace, and I just love hat/hair as many know, so this was a must have, the style and length of the hair is perfect, and the fedora is really well made and beautifully textured. The second style is actually Ison hair, they recently launched a hair line at Hair Fair 2012 and this style is so pretty and wavey goodness. The third was a KiK release, and the face framing fullness of this style was just wowza for me, and perfect for this Mod looking look.
Don’t forget to take another run through Vintage Fair before it ends for the year.
