Alpha Tutorial – Bake on Mesh options
Edit: I will add to this soon but this will work for Bake on Mesh now that it is live in SL
Hi, Tutorial time here, and even though I did this once a long time ago now for a magazine; I realised it never actually made it to my blog. Now with Mesh being a huge addition to the grid, one thing that is going to come into play a lot more often are alpha layers. I have already noticed that some are not exactly fitted to the exact shape of the mesh, which is not really surprising. So I have taken the time to show you how you can make your own, and then possibly open up the possibilities of more clothing for yourself… because you will know that if a demo doesn’t fit exactly, but you can make your own alpha, you can whip one up first, try the demo again and VOILA a 10L upload could make you incredibly happy.
First thing to do is to get the avatar templates that are used for the real avatar body. They are located HERE , the better option are the Chip Midnight ones as they have clearer detail.
The first thing you do is open up the upper and lower body templates in your PS or Gimp program. Then save the upper and lower as as jpeg, png or targa, it doesn’t matter which, and it will not change the template.

Once you have done that bring both into SL.Once you have them uploaded make a new folder in your clothing or body parts folder. Name it Template Layers. Then right click inside of it and choose New Clothes > New Shirt , then New Clothes > New Pants and then wear them so you look like you are wearing a white catsuit.
Go into edit on the pants layer, and drag the template texture you uploaded to the texture panel on the pants, and save. Then do the same to the shirt layer. Once you have saved both you will see that every designer you have ever bought an item from deserves a round of applause, because this thing is seriously insane to work on.
Now if you put back on the alpha layer that you got with your demo you can see exactly where on the template it goes.

Then once that rezzes, you can wear the mesh and see where the alpha needs to be for you.
Now go back to your PS or Gimp and get the upper clothing layer template. You can turn off every layer that you don’t need, and leave the one that makes the most sense to you. Then the rest of this is going to make more sense to you by how you feel the most comfortable with your tools. Some can use eraser, some just outline and delete, some will be all fancy, but the overall idea is, what you want to be alpha on your body, needs to be alpha on the template. Make sure you also check the back of your body, to see if the mesh is higher or lower than you need.
I used the lasso tool to draw a little bit inside of the line I need, and then cut out the entire portion of the shirt I want alpha, then once I have done front and back I filled the rest with black. Saved as a png and uploaded into SL .
Then in the same folder I made a new alpha mask layer, named it tube top, then wear it, and you will see that you are popping right out of your mesh. Go into edit on the alpha layer and add your new alpha texture.
Now I am not a professional at this, I will admit it took me three times to get it spot on, the front was too high at first, then the back had to be lowered also. But if this was a gown or something with some serious money behind it, or I just really loved it so much as a top…well 30L to get it to fit is much better than walking away, or worse, spending however many L’s on it and not being able to wear it without changing my shape.
Now the other big advantage to learning this is your older shoes, as well as layer limits that those that refuse to use V2 encounter. If a shoe/boot has an invisi prim attached to the shoe/boot then this wont work, but some shoes/boots had them as separate attachments, so this will. Do not wait around for stores to update, they haven’t up until now, so pretty much given that they are not going to. If you have a pair of boots you love and want to wear with alpha instead of invisiprims then follow the same steps on the legs potion of the templates. Boots are actually much easier as they tend to be really easy to work out where they end. Shoes are harder, as the heel style and other things come into play, but again, if you don’t want to see it, you make it alpha. So it is worth a try.
Another thing is that if you have layer limits, now with mesh, or just because other things you wear use alpha, you can make your own alpha mixes. Some stores are kind enough to include the alpha texture with the purchase, so you can do this, but consider combining boots with corset, or boots with tube top, and voila, only using one layer instead of two.
I hope this helped, and I hope that it saves you some concerns you may have about only being able to change shape with Mesh.
In the pics I am using the Full Perms Tube top by Random Crap by Damien Fate/Washu Zebrastrip, you can find so many full perms Mesh items there or on their marketplace page. Demo hoodie available. The secret passage is in the corner of the station between the wall and the train, just walk through the wall and you will find the mesh items, or IM Washu Zebrastripe for help.

OMG The Sitting
Honestly since I have been lucky enough to have some sneak peaks at Mesh prior to today, the one thing that stood out the most was the bending knees, and the dresses that fold with your body. Since 2007 and sculpts being used more and more, as much as they have always been awesome, one thing started changing, we stopped sitting and everyone was always standing.
When it was just prim skirts with flexi they created the easy sitting scripts, that were more work than helpful to be honest, but you could never really get those things to do much for sculpts. When pants legs were made more and more by full sculpts also, you would sit and your lower portion would go one way, and your upper would stick out making it look like you had broken yourself in someway.Mesh has changed all that again, and now without even having to round out any edges I give you SITTING! Also my bottom isn’t all askew and my girly parts aren’t broken either. To really understand how much love you will have for mesh, go try the new Group Gift from SLink – Jeans worn – and see how your legs don’t break from your AO and other such things.
You must have a Mesh Enabled Viewer, and you must be on a Mesh sim – SLink is a mesh sim so try the jeans on there, but be sure to take them off again when TPing away, as all sims will not be full mesh until tomorrow. You need to join the Slink group to get the jeans, but they are a great way to see what all the fuss is about.

Ploomberry Slushie
This hair had definitely broken through any limits I put on myself regarding flower hair. Always I have been a little eeek about hair with accessories built in, because I like the without option, as well as thinking it can tend to limit the hair wear. But this new Kendal style is just beautiful. The soft locks, the beachy length and soft waves. Then you have the flower not only the ones in the hair, but also the one that is a mouth attachment and totally looks the type you would get in a salad these days, and on top of ALL that, you get a hud that changes the flower and stamen texture into at least a dozen colours…SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL.
Kendal is by Ploom and the hair coming out of Helyanwe lately is just gorgeous. PLOOM is a magical hairstore for us oldbies, a place where you can feel safe in your purchase, and also know that you will get so much bang for your buck. Especially with the HUD attachment in the hair packs she provides. Not only do you get the choice from the colour packs you choose, but about a bazillion streaks options as well all built in. All of this and only three scripts in the whole hair o/ all win, especially as it is mod, so if you don’t like wearing scripts, you can make a copy, do the colours you want for the day and delete the scripts.
The Kendal hair is a great style to wear with your new Blue Slush outfit, how cute is this Jersey Dress and leggings. So many layers in this pack, and the leggings come in black or white. Then you have with panties or without and OMG the panties are NEON GREEN so you will totally bust anyone perving up there, because no one can resist exclaiming YOUR KNICKERS ARE BRIGHT GREEN!. A great black belt also comes with the set, but I opted for the twin white one from Aoharu, and the adorable lace up boots also from their Anexx store – word on the street is they are having a sale over Aoharu and Anexx way, so you should run over and not miss out – I hope it is still on.
The skin I am wearing is divine. It is the Nina skin from Baiastice and I personally believe that even though I have really liked every skin I have ever worn from there, this one is hands down her best work to date skins wise. There is always a really obvious softness to the skin itself, with glamorous make ups, and always the most beautiful reds. But this one is a lot sharper and very attention grabbing…that and the freckles layers – not shown – different brow options and so on, a skin not to be missed if on the look out. I was equally overjoyed that all the make ups went with all the flower colours in the Kendal hair o/.
There are other styles of Ploom now released and the poses I am using are also Ploom, the pose section is steadily building some great must haves in there.

Bitches be Crazy
One of the excellent items available in the Platinum Hunt that is still on, is the My Padded Room by aDORKable. I actually watched this become what it is, and the 7 wonderful poses really work well for any kind of photography. The room is modify which really helps with the kind of layout you might want to create. This would also be incredible for machinema as well as photo ops, or seriously you kind of find yourself just in there chillin and wondering ‘what next?”.
I have been tearing around SL this week in the NEW Zaara denim skirts, she also has a great item in the Platinum hunt, the clue is something about sitting on a golden throne, a hint from me…do not spend all your time looking for a throne, just look for something gold. The handpainted denim that Zaara has been producing lately has been great, I especially like that the skirt comes on layers so you can do things like layer them over leggings or whatever. I went with stockings today though, the floral side gartered ones from League, I love these, and the floral print is YUM.
I am also wearing the COCO cuffs, these actually came with one of her sleeveless shirts, and one day I might wear the shirt…but for now it’s all about the cuffs. COCO is also having an insane 75% off SALE, so now is the time to buy it all. The hair I have on is Moss, another of the recent releases from LeLutka, inspired by Kate Moss, and that girl at one time was completely in need of a padded room of her own, but has of late really sorted herself out…YAY.
I feel very tomb raider in this outfit, and at the moment I am reading all of the Foxtrot cartoon strips starting back at 1998 and was laughing myself silly that the youngest boy was horrified at the concept of playing a girl in a video game. Lucky for whoever made that game that all boys hadn’t thought that way, or that franchise would never have gotten as big as it did.
Remember the items at the Platinum Hunt are only 10L each, and for something like My Padded Room you would be CRAZZZZY to miss out.

The owls are not what they seem
When I saw this dress it reminded me of the movies, the ones where the very strong female character would appear in a very asian inspired dress. Often of course not an asian woman, so the effect was always very attention grabbing.
Kunglers always grabs my attention, I really do need to visit that store more often, and for everyone what better time than now with this dress being part of the Platinum hunt. The hair also part of the hunt is from Elikatira, a beautiful head-banded updo, this style can look great for all occasions, even for the office, go you naughty librarian you.
I ran over to Tokidoki the other day with Whimsy, they are having a red and yellow items sale at the moment. If not sure it is still on, then compare the prices of the red or yellow to another colour in the same. I had to do that as it is not really clearly marked what is or isn’t. Anyway I picked up this cute bag, and there were some other bits and pieces I grabbed that are great, I especially love her oversized headbands.
I am using a lovely pose by Geez in this post, Grazia has decided to sell all her poses as singles now, and has been releasing regularly since..so make sure and check them out too.

Indicative of the…
So we know I loves me some hat hair, but hair that fits well under hats with minimal effort at all are all win. The new LeLutka hair Decent does just that, with its tucked behind the ears look it was perfect for this wonderful hat that is part of the Platinum Hunt that just started yesterday.
Over 100 stores with various items all over the grid, all you have to do is find the very tiffany’s like little blue box. If you want to find the slurls to the stores you just need to click the link below the poster, and not only will you get slurls but hints as to their locations as well. Or you can join the group and get up to the minute help. All the Platinum Hunt items are marked at an insanely low 10L per, so do not miss out on the incredible effort these designers have put in.
I took pieces from some of the items, so that I could create my own looks, and show the versatility of the pieces. The Indi item does come with the upper portion of the skirt on the top, but the highwaisted skirt in riddle covers that up nicely. I ran off and bought the white polish pack for the curvacious boots, even though I have the all white pair, I just really wanted the black detailing to add, so with the polish option that was easy peasy.
Start hunting, there will be more shown over the next few days, and I am sure you will find some other treasures while visiting the amazing stores.

Classic
When I was younger, my Mum always tried to encourage me to not buy junky trend items, but to buy classic staples that would never go out of fashion. Of course being a teen means not listening, but even though I do still have a box full of crappy very plasticy jewelry and other crapolla, I do also have an incredible amount of classic items.
When Thora made Brigitte there was an instant image in my head, and I have to be honest I am not even a 100% sure it comes from Brigitte, but the iconic imagery is still there in my head. The bodysuit, the turtleneck and a sexy pair of seamed pantyhose. The three items shown solo here are backing pieces to any mainshow. Add a belt, slip ons and some slacks and you are good to go, or a skirt and some maryjanes or ballet flats and you could end up dancing until dawn. So many looks stem from these pieces, they should have their own stage. But today they are going to be the backdrop for the amazing hair from LeLutka. It comes in two attachments so that the tail part stays where it should on the body, and the high backcombed portion is just stunning.
I am wearing also the new Hadley skin from LeLutka with some make up add ons such as liner and lipstick from the Gem range. Make sure you check out the new hair releases at LeLutka, I will be showing the rest asap. Right now the one that teaches me everything is yacking at me, so time to sign off lol.

The second of the sister skins for LeLutka hit the grid today. Hadley is a younger sister to the previous Flutter line, her button nose and pouty lips shouldn’t fool you though, she is all stature and focus. Something about the overall Hadley look had me thinking athlete as soon as I saw her.
She has those scandinavian like cheekbones, youthful face and an incredibly dynamic body…yes the same body as Flutter, but there is something about Hadley that, especially when only wearing hair base, is very sporty like. The trick though when creating an athletic looking skin, is to not make her so sporty that she can’t be feminine, and that is where Minnu’s skills come into play, that and a beautiful arangement of make ups, and fuller glossier lips. The lipsticks of Hadley aren’t overly shiny, but creamier than past lipsticks have been, for me that is a big plus.
I also did some playing around with Hadley last week and found that the Gem lipsticks do really well with her face, they don’t all work, but if you have them or other lipsticks on make up layers, give them a go, you can end up with a lovely hybrid Hadley. If you want to see Hadley up close and personal, not only are there demos as usual, but if you join the LeLutka group you will find a beautiful set of all tones skins in a special make up. A great gift from LeLutka.
I was feeling more love for the vintage denim shorts by Royal Blue, these shorts are just fabulous to wear, and open up lots of layering possibilities. I went with some tshirt and tanks from Jane, and the beautiful jewelry from League – Nena does such great work with accessories. I was feeling very brownzilla and it all came up a treat, actually starting with the shorts, then down to shoes and socks. The sculpted socks from Maitreya are such old faithfuls if you don’t have them already you really need to grab them.
At the moment there is a new event running called Collabor88, where all items are from 88L and upwards, but most are at 88. The concept is that designers will changet out the items on the 8th of every month and at some stages they will actually do collaborations with eachother – I am looking forward to seeing that. Breeze is the hair released by Elikatira for the first of these events, and it is a beautiful style, and the price is amazing, so make sure you visit and get this wonderful hair.

Money Shots
It isn’t really the ‘money shot’ because we all know what that really is…and if you don’t it is not my job to tell you. But I did have to come up with something almost as fun as the movie of the past, and these shoes definitely deserved the spotlight. These shoes are the shoes that can help you pay for college, you know the ones you wear during that part time job that is just a means to law school.
When Siddean first showed Mel and I these shoes it was instant, lust! I really want a pair with fish in them. The options are excellent, as you get four pairs in the one colour. Clear soles, Clear Straps and Solids of both. They are totally the perfect working girl shoes, and I love them because they go so wonderfully well with Latex.
Goth1c0 is a brand that has been around for a long time, and its creator disappears every once in a while, but now seems to have some help in the form of other creators. I say yay, more Goth1c0 please. The first two items are from there, and they are fun and sexy, and a tad revealing. So much so that with the first one I had to search pasties in my inventory for some modesty. I really like the pieces to this set, I could see wearing the collar portion with other things easily.
Also showing off the latest two releases of Exile hair, I am so in love with the Valerie, I have been singing that damn song all day. It is great to have so many choices of styles with each release, Exile definitely fulfills the ‘ I don’t want to look like who I am shopping with’ need many friends who shop together need. Even when we do fall for the same do’s and usually when it comes to Exile Whimsy is trying to pull it off my head, she tends to go for the lighter reds, so it all works.
While taking the pics, I was talking in loose text to Mel – he is away at the moment, so thank goodness for phone skype text…and he couldn’t help himself with his handy phone internet access, he bought me a pressie off Marketplace. I am really happy too, because usually Graves is not his first choice when it comes to latex, but I really like it. I think it is because it tends to lead to more the RP aspect of rubbery goodness, than just the shiney side. I love it because I can feel all warrior like and still sexy in it, but this set is a bit different and while there is a lot more layering to it, I went with the bare minimal. Which also shows off the body of the gorgeous Ploom skins I am wearing. Not only do they have a great body, but the make ups and petulant lips are just divine.
It was so much fun pairing it all up with the new Destiny shoes, and then I realised that it was latex and slink combined, and well that just means one thing STRIPPER POLE!
Destiny will be released tomorrow I believe, so make sure you go do all the things you need to do before trying them, like applying to law school or maybe waxing?

Feeling the newness love today. Of course the skin was finally released today, and Flutter by LeLutka is definitely a charmer. It took Whimsy all of 3 seconds to decide it was replacing Gem for her as a default skin for herself. I went with the paler of the NEW tones today, I was kind of feeling a little moody, so it suited my wanting to stomp around mood.
One of my favourite went from one thing to another in SL success stories has to be MichaMi. Milla was one of the most – and still is – incredible bloggers from the very start, she had a way about her that made it sunny all the time. I know I have mentioned it in the past, but one of my fondest fashion show in SL memories was being stuck in the audience with her and Whimsy and some others, during another of those ‘everything that can go wrong will ‘ days SL has every so often.
Whimsy passed around cocktails, we all crashed at least four times each and it was back in the days you ended up under water upside down in the sitting position bugs. All the while Milla was cracking me up trying to steal my inventory, and to this day I still have no clue other than DD being in the show, what was released, if we even ended up seeing newness or what, all I remember is the giggling and fun we had. So then Milla took a break from Second Life and came back a Designer, oooo’s and aaaaaa’s all over the place and she really is a most incredibly talented one. Not only is her style uniquely her own, I swear I could spot a MichaMi item even if I didn’t know it, and had never seen it…there is something about her technique that is hers. The one major stand out is her fabrics, and seam work, where she actually seems to join her fabric together, and the back seamwork on this new dress is va va OMG look at my hot bum. But I am not showing you, you have to buy it and see for yourself lol.
As I said a bit of a mood today, so I added MOOD Jewelry lol the Parade Pearls are still a great big hit with me, I especially love the ring, which I did copy paste and then reattach to the other hand. The great thing about copyable items, and now the multiple attachments is that you can do such things, such as nails and rings together from different stores. I am also wearing the really cool open boots by G*field that they created for Shoe Fair, and somehow I haven’t shown since. They actually come in two parts, so it is possible to even wear the uppers with the other colours, mixing and matching, or possibly even wear them with other shoes if you feel like it.
Really adoring this full length Ploom hair, it is very sexy and I had to show the latest as well which is the Jinx, derived from a style that was last weeks project themeory style, it proved so popular that a regular non jungle themed version was called for. The double pigtails are fluffy and fun, and suited the look created with the NEW about to be released Vintage Denim Shorts by Royal Blue. Marni actually has a few items about to be released tonight, as well as a group gift in the works, so be sure to hit up her subscriber.
These Vintage Denim shorts are so adorable, I especially love the pulled down pockets, they more remind me of really well tailored pants cut off, but either way, denim or fabric, they are neat to wear. Whether with thigh high socks like these ones, or full leggings, its a great look for all weather wear.
