Mainstore Monday – AlaskaMetro (who saw that coming)

Sasy Scarborough - AlaskaMetro - Mainstore Monday
Sasy Scarborough - AlaskaMetro Store - Mainstore Monday

Did You Know: In the FIRESTORM viewer (and possibly others), you can ‘Protect’ folders in your inventory, locking them in place so they can’t be accidentally deleted or moved. To enable this, simply right-click the folder and select “Protect.” This is an incredibly useful feature, especially for content creators, to safeguard their work.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of AlaskaMetro—not just her makeup, skins, and clothing/lingerie, but also her work as an overall content creator and Second Life resident. Her folder in my inventory is one of the few I’ve protected using Firestorm’s tools. I’ve been using AlaskaMetro’s creations for years, with blog posts dating back to at least 2008 (on this blog). I had the pleasure of first interacting with her during Another Fundraiser, a massive project where she helped select the benefiting charity. Her philanthropic nature shines through—she often participates in events that donate proceeds to charity and creates bandanas for Hair Fair every year.

At one point, Alaska even attempted to revolutionise Second Life itself. With help from another creator, Namssor, she created a way to replace the default Second Life skin by editing the base files on your hard drive. This was groundbreaking before tattoo layers existed.

Let me paint a picture: before tattoo layers, we had one of each wearable layer—skin, socks, gloves, shoebase, hair, underpants, undershirt, pants, shirt, and jacket (the jacket layer did all the heavy lifting). There were no alphas, no tattoos, no stacked layers. It was medieval. Alaska’s innovation, called Synergy, allowed users to replace the default skin, freeing up the skin layer for customisation. This essentially created a workaround for the non-existent tattoo layer. She invited bloggers like me to test and share this concept, providing all the tools and guidance we needed. This was back in 2009 and remains one of the most exciting memories I have of her and her work. I wouldn’t be surprised if it directly influenced the implementation of tattoo and stacked layers in Second Life.

Alaska is that kind of creator—always pushing boundaries to enhance our experience. Every makeup item has a demo, product images make finding your look easy, and her store layout is intuitive. On her marketplace, she even has a secondary outlet for older creations at fantastic discounts. I once opened 81 tabs to buy everything I didn’t already own!

Her range is stunning, from delicate, wistful lingerie to bold, editorial makeup. She’s incredibly inclusive, creating products like flat chest skin layers for add-ons and other niche needs. If you’re not already an AlaskaMetro customer, visit her main store, play dress-up with the demos, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

I’m wearing AlaskaMetro skin, makeup, and adorable foil freckles that I love. Whether you’re going for a soft look or high-impact glamour, you’ll find it all. I’ve also layered a lovely camisole underneath for a subtle touch. The jeans are by The Kiwi Co. and are absolute must-haves! They include an “inside boots” option, making them perfect for pairing with these chunky, fur-lined, lace-up boots. This feature is so thoughtful, even if it doesn’t work with every boot. The sweater is another standout by Fashionably Dead, with both long and short versions. The oversized sleeves are so fun, completely covering the hands for that cosy, wiggly-fingers vibe.

Finally, let’s talk about this hair by Monso. It’s inspired by Jinx from Arcane—this is the Jinx 2 style. I love its shorter length with tendrils and flyaways. I even switched up my usual black hair for a punky soft pink with dark roots. It’s such a cool look!

    Training Day

    Sasy Scarborough - Training Day

Did you know: System/BOM Clothing layers, when modifiable, come with their own sliders in edit mode. These sliders allow for adjustments in various directions, offering more than just tinting options. This opens up creative possibilities to use the layers in ways beyond their original purpose. If you’re including these layers in your product, please leave them modifiable—you never know what unique results users might achieve!

It is no secret that I absolutely love BOM (Bakes on Mesh) and the ability to layer looks because of it. We definitely had an easier time creating unique styles when working with system layers exclusively in the past. Being able to utilise it now with mesh gives a lot back and can expand your wardrobe in many ways—some you may not have even thought of.

This look today was built from the tubetop up. I had actually gone to wear it and felt it was a bit too flesh-revealing. Some days you don’t mind, and some days you do. I scoured my inventory for a T-shirt and found one that was a tad longer than the tubetop but had a knotted look to it. While a flat, longer shirt would have been fine, the knot didn’t work. I opened it up in edit mode, it being delightfully modifiable and all, and worked the sliders to make it shorter, sliding it under the tubetop lengthwise while keeping the high neck and sleeves. The result? A layered look I loved. I was all ready to show it to you in the future.

Then I was wowed by these boots. As I live in the future, if you see this and still have time, you can pick them up for a discounted price. However, even if you miss the sale, they’re so worth their regular price—especially if you’re a ballet boot fan. I am, and these are not my first boots of this kind from Azoury. Honestly, if you look at their releases over the years, you have to wonder what goes on in the minds of the creators at that brand—it must be wonderful to have that kind of imagination. These boots come in both classic (it’s funny we call them that now) and PBR texture options. They also come as separate left and right leg attachments. At first, I wondered why, and then realised: obviously, you might have a robot leg or something else on one side and only need one boot. I love that they cater to that thought. Azoury makes products for such scenarios, and from experience, I know there are customers who specifically seek separate footwear.

The style of these boots is undeniably ballet-inspired, with incredible leather work. But it’s the metal encasement at the toes that has me imagining all sorts of barbaric training methods. It’s not just a look—it’s a whole vibe, and I love it.

I had them on, paired with my tubetop and tee. At first, I was wearing random shorts but then realised the creasing details in this mini skirt by Cynful matched the style of the boots perfectly. The skirt’s intricate detailing really stands out for something so small—I had to pause and giggle because it is a tiny skirt. Tiny, but with so much emphasis, and I adore that. It’s actually part of a set that includes a bodysuit with a glorious back design, but that’s for another time.

Just when I thought I was ready, lightning struck—or rather, I stumbled across an ad on social media announcing that KillJoy had released some sleeves. Stop the presses! Off I went, because, as you may know, arm warmers and sleeve add-ons are my bliss. These were a must-have, and they were reduced in price at the time, so I didn’t delay. You might not think you need these now, but trust me, you will in the future.

While I was already dressed, and some might pair these sleeves with a sleeveless look, I loved how they transitioned between my BOM layers, the tubetop, and everything else. They added so much versatility to the outfit. It’s a texture soup, and that makes me so happy. I did increase the gloss on my body for the photo, which added a shine to the T-shirt. While I prefer the matte cotton look without it, the sheen worked well for the picture. You can play around with these settings as you like. The sleeves themselves have three texture panels to choose from: latex, leather, and satin, with some offering extra detailing beyond solid colours.

I finished off the look with this hair I’ve been living in for the past few days. Typical for me, I went to grab No.Match’s latest release at Fameshed—you may have seen it in my previous post and video about the new in-browser Second Life testing phase—but then ended up at the No.Match store itself. I grabbed two more styles and ended up using the third purchase instead of the first. That’s just how I roll.

A bit Mary a bit Rhoda

A bit Mary a bit Rhoda

Sometimes you can be a bit of both things, types of people or types of taste. This outfit by Tee*fy has all the frills, bows and lace of a good girl, but the length, the reveal and the corsetry of someone a little more naughty. I like the mix, the tongue in cheek innocence of it all, and the options are awesome for prints and colours. The little lamb headband by Mewsery does not hurt for bringing together that look, with the devil horns aspect which I have turned off going even further to show that there may be a little devil in all of us. The headband also has an amazing HUD full of options to change colours and make your own fun combinations.

This hair by Monso is a very girly hair too, not only just because it has a lovely braid, but it is one of those styles that shows how girls will just grab all the long bits and tie them out of the way, or braid/plait them etc, and I love that messy layered control look of it all. I was feeling a bit cold with the bare arms so added these armbands I found in my inventory, that apparently came with boots! go figure lol, they are cute though.

    Getting my Boho Chic On

    Getting my Boho Chic on

I am having one of my annual layout meltdowns. I say annual, this is the kind of thing though that depending on how much Blogging I am in fact doing, can be once or five hundred and twenty five times a year. I do not do much editing in my pictures, even less now that everything is mesh. Because of that, I usually get all creative anxious and want to make the pictures I do take look presentable in some way that is fun for me, and hopefully enjoyable for you too, even if really simple, it is just how I get. In the years that I have been doing this though, it also means that I have done so many different styles, that sometimes I want to jump back to something already done, or done but now different, so pay no mind to my crazy right now, I am all over the place. I also tried to work out the dimensions for pictures to present correctly in social media, and that means limiting width and height, and goodness does that just make you nuts.

I found this top in a Gacha, and it has all the boho loveliness that you need in a going to a festival kind of look. Even though black, I wanted to keep adding to the detail colours and felt that the olive was just perfect. I mentioned the other day great customer service, this is another case of that. The leggings and sleeves are by Blamage, and the sleeves are actually part of a top. The top part is just hidden…this is because when I purchased the top, I ached for the sleeves to be separate items, and contacted the creator, who then with very little gap in time, came back to me with a new hud that hid the sleeves or hid the top, so you get the best of both worlds. I just loved that the ruffled trim to the leggings waistband and the sleeves matched so well to the similar trim on the top.

When I am out, and the sun is a bit stronger than expected, I often say ‘I am growing new freckles’. If you have freckles you will totally understand…the Summer blush sets by Izzie’s make that sunkissed reddish glow to the body and a smattering of freckles really bring that look alive, and that really enhanced this whole ensemble.

The divine jewellery is another of my old and new mixes. The earrings are the latest Beachy Boho earrings set by Yummy, and the Dreamcatcher necklace that is almost 10 years old now, is also by Yummy and I think they work marvelously together. What a skill she has in creating fine pieces, and the detailing in that dreamcatcher is amazing, look at the hook and wire bending metal work that went into holding on the gemstones…that is definitely above and beyond work when you consider how rare it would be to be zoomed in that close to see it. As a fish lover, I logged in and raced to get the set of earrings, because its all under the sea type goodness.

The whole look was fun and lively, and so the hairstyle had to tap into that cuteness, and this Batalie style by Exile did that and then some. It is actually a Halloween style, with a bat wing headband, but the headband is separate and the hairstyle on its own is adorable, and that name is just double fun.

    Just Beachy

    Just Beachy

I saw this hair at this round of Collabor88 and just had to have it. It gives off that dried in the sun from the surf look, that if I was to catch some in my mouth it would be salty, and I am here for that. When your hair is neither straight nor curly, but that in between, hitting this look is a blessed day, and I can even describe the day that it happened for me in RL, and how upset I was that it was just an ordinary day of the week and there was nowhere to go looking so awesome.

Monso has released some amazing styles that I love over the years, and this one is just jumping in leaps and bounds to the head of the list. The dark roots just make it even more fun, and there is an actual style variation that puts the hair behind the shoulders and gets rid of most of the hanging in front of the face look, but no thank you very much, not today, maybe not ever for me, but I love that I do have the option.

Speaking of options, I have mentioned before about how un-shy I am when it comes to approaching creators – with respect – about wanting more from something, and when I got this Chloe set from Smesh I was addicted to the bustier and sleeves, I believe I have mentioned that in the past, but while I loved the colours it came with I wanted more, so I contacted the creator and asked to consider making another colour palette pack…she threw me a curveball because she asked for colours I wanted, and honestly that was the thing, I did not care, I just wanted more. So to hear from her a few months later, randomly, with a v2 HUD of a few other pastel colours made me blissfully happy, because she not only added more, but remembered it was me that contacted her and got back to me, how is that for awesome customer service, I am not 100% sure where this pastel version has ended up, so if you do not see it, maybe contact her and ask. I layered the bustier over an older tank I had. I love being able to layer mesh and bom.

    Everything is Rosie

    Everything is Rosie

Bakes on Mesh is still scary to some, or confusing, I myself am confused by how it is, but it is, and I hate that people miss out on such amazing things because of that fear of the unknown. The confusion I often encounter, is that because it was named something other than what it is, people think it is something new to them, when in fact it is how everyone for the most part started their Second Lives in the first place. Bakes on Mesh (BOM) is system layers, that is it, pure and simple. It is the same icons we used before we had mesh bodies and appliers became a thing. We are now almost five years into it, but I still randomly see comments of people that are older than mesh, saying they will never use it. One of the reasons that I mention this, other than to start a narrative – oh how I miss the days when people used to engage with Blogs and Bloggers – is because not only am I probably BOM’s biggest fan, but also because of things that people may not think of when using it.

People that do use it, have possibly heard of the stacking of layers, that when you wear bom layers you need to sometimes make sure that the layers are in the correct order so that each component is visible, such as you cannot wear eyebrows before you wear a skins face (tattoo layer) or the brows will sit under the skin, and you will look way too editorial.

But it is that stacking that makes me blissfully happy, because as I do believe I have mentioned in the past, I stack multiple versions of the SAME items. Have a bra or tank top that you want to wear under something but it is sheer, right click copy and then paste and then wear as many versions of the same thing until it is no longer sheer. Have a blush that is just not giving you enough ooomph, do not go looking for another blush, copy, paste and stack multiple until it gives you more – now this may not always work, it is going to depend greatly on how the item is made, but for the most part it does work. Such as my eyeshadow today, I have 3 layers of it on, because it had blended a little too much into my face with the lighting I was using, and the foil freckles the same thing, they were not popping enough for my pic, but stacking multiple of them gave me the outcome I wanted. This may not work with everything, but the next time you find that you feel a little underwhelmed by the outcome of the BOM item that you really want to use, give it a try, right click copy then paste then add. We could never do that with appliers and you have 60+layers to play with, so go wild!

Another highlight to my day/look today, is when different brands do such a similar colour palette and then also fit against each other so well. This top is from Rowne and the bloomers that had me logging in and racing to get are from Tres Blah. I was ecstatic to find out that the plunging V base of the top fit perfectly over the waistband of the bloomers. Then to have only a few colours of the top, but the fatpack of the bloomers, meant that I had a bit of wiggle room with the colours, and this combination was perfection. I love this combination, and can see myself bloomering all over Second Life like this. I love that they are ruffled and so feminine but have this knit look to them, that works so well with the top that is also a wool heavier mix look. Perfection for my Winter down here rebellion.

I ran over to Lamb to see what I could put together hair wise for this look, originally I had planned to do a more lady like updo look, then thought something wavy midlength and wild…then across the room, in the older styles I saw Zelda II. Now if you were not around when this style was released, you missed what we would consider a broke the grid moment…the majority of the grid was wearing this hair for weeks. I did not have the II version, I had the original version, so I was delighted to see that there was a rose gold metal option on the HUD, so I grabbed the pastels pack, because it was definitely a whole vibe, and back to the studio I went.

Once I had the whole look together, I was wondering, does it need a little something more…I found this lovely choker in my inventory that delightfully is MOD, and a few tints and everything was Rosie!

    ISONIC

    Isonic

When you have been a Blogger as long as I have, you have seen so many items come out of long standing stores in Second Life. Today I was able to mix and match newer releases with recent-ish releases, and some releases that I am not sure if they even exist anywhere for purchase but are by the same creator. That is the joy of Blogging though, styling a look together is not meant to always encourage someone to run out and buy it all and replicate what you did – mind you, if you want to do that go ahead – but more to inspire someone to go out and shop for elements they may not have, and then to remember components that they may already own in their inventory, to then use in a way that maybe they had not thought of in the past.

Ison is one such brand, they have been around so long now, that it is hard to really remember a time we didn’t have them. I for one am glad we do, because Harry is such a lovely creator, and has such classic staple style, that as you evolve fashionably in Second Life he is there to guide that growth. I went to Collabor88 to grab this gorgeous cardigan and tank top from Ison, and they come in all the gorgeous packs that Ison is known for, I look forward to wearing each piece in many other ways in future. Their colour palettes are always so pleasing. Adding some accessories that are much older. The bag I was able to size down and the glasses are still perfect, with a colour hud that worked out so well with my look. I am and have always been – not that this is even news to anyone – a colour co-ordination addict. I cannot help it, I am that kind of person. So the mix of red, black and gold came up a treat for this look – we will ignore the fact that the bag has silver metal, sometimes you just have to go with what you have. It all paired up nicely with the high waisted jeans by Rowne.

This hairstyle by TRUTH was also just perfect for this strolling around the city look. I really like the smoothed upper to the soft cascading waves look to it, then being able to pair it up with accessories like a headband or even just resting sunnies atop your head, whatever works, it is fun.

    Striking

    Striking

I do love a good braided hairstyle, but what grabs me about this one, is that the ombre section of their HUD does not just give you a tapered effect going down, but actually follows the concept of what having an ombre hair style would do if braided. Now I cannot profess to doing a lot of ombre type wearing, to know how every store does a braid if they have one, but I just really loved the outcome of this one, and it really seemed to go that extra mile. Now I am also wearing my favourite, go to hairbase by Izzie’s, this is her babyhairsv2 hairbase, which is years old now, but it has been my go to the whole time, and really added to this hair in a great way. It is made with the SLUV so works perfectly with the Genus Morph heads. This also allows me to break out my AlaskaMetro makeup that is also SLUV, and the editorial set is just perfect for this look, everything started at the top for this post, and progressed from there.

This braid was so striking, that it needed equally striking accessories, and these earrings from Mandala are that. The mix of red, white and black, was just perfect for this look, and this great dress from Vinyl brought it all together. I am wearing bom leggings with the dress, because one, I am cold, and two, I am cold. I did however leave some room to show off my UTOPIA@Design shoes I picked up at Shop and Hop SLB21, because they are gorgeous shoes and at the moment discounted in the UTOPIA@Design booth.

The Vault – The Sounds of the City

The Vault - The sound of the city

I am still living in my Winter nod mode, because while it is sunny outside today, it is still really cold down here. I found these delightful knitted and well padded earmuffs by Pare that were a whole vibe of the opposite of wanting to hear things and instead feeling like you could just tune it all out, and sometimes that is exactly what you want to do. So I put together this going to the street markets kind of look, and pinned back my hair and off I go. Again another great Lamb style that has a pinned back section that gives realism to the earmuffs being worn. I really like being able to believe that feeling of the look.

    The Vault – Winter Rebel

    The Vault - Winter Rebel

When you live on the other side of the equator, you really are living a Second Double Life. It is funny how many of us there are that are not in the start of Summer right now, but all fashion and releases at this time of the year definitely lean in that direction. This is not a new rant, I think I mumble something about this every year. I am not really upset about it, it is just funny. Today I decided to mix it up a bit, with a lightweight look, but with a nod to the cold that is the other half of the world, with this great headband from Pare, the beautiful cami top is also from Pare, and check out how fantastic the fit is on those straps.

Now the hairstyle I am wearing is a Truth Collective style by Faga. However, underneath the headband is an actual braid going across the top ear to ear. This is a lovely style, but because it was all so securely pulled back to fit under the braiding, it was also the perfect style for this headband, as it gives the real impression that the headband is what pulled back the hair…I love that.

I also wanted to create a vibe, that said even girls into the darker edgier side of things, can have a girly day. These armlets, the lovely earrings and the bhindi are all from stores featured at The Vault. Each item has HUD options and they all worked out well together for my needs. Maybe I am out shopping for some eye of newt, or just milling through a crowd to accidentally on purpose get a few strands of someones hair, for purely innocent reasons of course.
